Want more insight?

Would you like to feel more empowered?

Find the most reliable sources of data, so you can make informed decisions. Seek out relevant information both externally and internally to help you make sense of your situation. Whether you’re applying for a new job, negotiating a higher salary, trying to get promoted, making a career change or choosing a mate, you can best evaluate your options when you know more and have the full picture.

2 Practical Strategies

Celebrating a client’s promotion reminded me of some valuable wisdom that has guided her and can support you to uncover more opportunities.

Ask, Don’t Assume

Do Your Homework

When you’re unsure of something, you simply may need more information. The only way to get it is to search and ask questions, rather than guess, or quickly rush to make up your mind without having all the data. You owe it to yourself to be well-informed.

My client was slightly disappointed by the salary increase received with her promotion, so we discussed how she might approach this. She wanted to negotiate because if you don’t ask, then the answer is definitely “no.”

We reviewed the pros and cons of her asking for what she wanted and determined there was no downside. While asking might initially feel uncomfortable or awkward, she recognized it was an important skill to develop as this practice would help her understand where she stood. I recorded a little video on this subject you might find interesting here.

Ask and you shall receive. After all, you just might get what you want. And if you don’t, then you know where you stand so you can decide how to respond. Being informed gives you a better vantage point to assess your situation and determine whether you are in the right place for you and whether they value your skills.

Regardless you will get 2 important sources of data:

1) EXTERNAL: their reaction will tell you what you might expect in the future and will give you an accurate picture of your current situation. Are they struggling financially or just cheap? Far better to live in reality than fantasy. Once you know what you’re dealing with, you can choose how to act.

2) INTERNAL: notice your reaction to their response. How does it make you feel? That important information can guide you to understand what’s really going on. Do you feel undervalued? Are you unhappy or should you stick around to make the best of where you are now?

Being informed lets you make the best decisions – conscious and intentional choices rather than unconscious reactive responses not grounded in reality. hope that knowing and trusting your own wisdom sounds appealing because in our increasingly fake news world, we need to rely on ourselves even more. Only we know what feels right for us, who we can trust and when we need to take care of ourselves or make new choices.

Trust Yourself!

Follow your instincts and intuition. Listen to what your gut is trying to tell you because more often than not, it will be right. Don’t ignore the important information your inner wisdom has for you.

When I initially saw the invitation to this Mexico retreat, I intuitively knew it would be meaningful. I liked the topic, people, timing, and location. Since everything was a “yes”, I signed up right away and I’m grateful that I listened to myself. I had such a wonderful experience, yet my rational mind could have easily talked me out of it because of my upcoming book launch, the added expense and the challenging political environment. My heart won out over my head.

Follow Your Inner Knowing!

These 2 points – asking rather than assuming and trusting yourself – can be applied to many related situations. I suggested that another client facing a relationship challenge get more information to avoid living in La La Land, not reality. She couldn’t read someone and wasn’t sure where she stood with them.

I encouraged her to have a brave conversation to find out where he was coming from, so she could know what was really going on. Otherwise the story she had created was solely in her imagination, without understanding the other person’s intentions.

People and organizations show us who they are through their words and actions. We just need to pay attention and notice. Sometimes others talk a good game, yet we need to observe what’s really going on to see how and whether they actually show up. It’s incumbent upon us to notice, so we can respond accordingly.

This could not be more relevant than in the current political environment.

Don’t Give Your Power Away!

What you don’t know can hurt you. So, be clear on your priorities, gather the relevant data and use the information you have to guide your choices and make informed decisions.

If you would like to feel more connected to your truth, join my upcoming workshop to find inner clarity. I will share how to know yourself (your values and preferences, strengths and challenges), choose your connections (boss, colleagues or companions) and find the right environments where you can excel (the companies, cultures, places and spaces where you work best).
