Reflections on BEING.... I don't know about you, but chilling out hasn't always come easily to me. The push to produce, achieve, and deliver. Hustle culture and running on the hamster wheel is often how we value ourselves in our capitalist society. Doing somehow seems like a marker of success. Of course, you could simply be keeping yourself busy to avoid dealing with what's really going on and how you really feel. Been there, done that. When I make time to allow myself to drop in, what I mostly notice is my inner wisdom. The thoughts and feelings lying just beneath the surface that are trying to communicate with me if I only give them some space to breathe and open. Do you let yourself listen and be still? What is being with yourself trying to reveal? If you find it hard to just "be," what might you be trying to avoid, ignore, or deny? No judgment. Just thoughtful inquiry. What are you avoiding, ignoring or denying in your life that needs your attention? I recently got one of those surprising reminders that what we resist persists. My teapot wasn’t flowing. While I noticed it wasn’t working properly, I did nothing. Then it exploded and spilled over my entire desk. Frustrating! It was demanding that I pay attention, yet I was busy focusing on other things. Then I had no choice but to slow down and deal with it. While spilled tea is not that consequential, think of the other things that build up that we should deal with but sometimes choose not to. The body aches or pains, the tension with a friend or partner, difficulties at work. I’ve had many clients shrug off issues, only to have them come to a head. Sometimes they are the cause because they lose their temper or rage quit or stop showing up. Other times they are forced into change by a difficult or untenable work situation. Different causes with similar outcomes. We can try to pretend nothing is going on when inside we know otherwise, but that’s not very helpful. When we choose to look away to protect ourselves or because we’re lazy and don’t want to deal, ultimately we may be forced to pay attention to things that aren’t working. Where in your life might you need to take action on something that you’ve been avoiding? Why have you been putting it off? What don’t you want to look at? You have an opportunity to address something now instead of delaying it to the future when it might be a bigger challenge. It’s your choice. #conscious leadership #growthcoach #warriorwisdom
