Going through a transition is inherently stressful! Whether we recently left a job and have to pursue a new opportunity or actually want to make a change by choice, dealing with the ups and downs of life and work can be challenging!  How do we keep ourselves focused on our goals to stay the course?

Here are 3 suggestions from my work supporting individuals navigating professional and life changes:

1) MANAGE DISCOMFORT

We have to learn how to tolerate uncomfortable feelings that are likely to arise in the process of putting ourselves out there in new ways that may not feel natural. Leaving a job where your identity was defined by your company and having to reach out to people to ask for help may be very difficult for many people. And we still need to take action, even if it is challenging because that is how we will create change. We need to be willing to stay with and in the process and not abandon ourselves or throw in the towel. We can’t lose faith when we have a setback because we need to recognize that it is part of the process to experience highs and lows at times. Keep in mind that, like a marathon runner, we may hit the wall at some point and that’s when we need to push through to get through to the runner’s high on the other side that sense of accomplishment when we achieve our goal.

2) REFRAME YOUR MINDSET TO STAY POSITIVE

It can be easy to get pulled down into negative thinking when we have a down day maybe someone doesn’t return our call or we don’t get a job offer we were hoping for. Instead of going into old thought patters, for instance thinking “no one is hiring older people” or “I’ll never find a job I like”, we need to shift our attitude pronto. Replace your old pattern with something more motivating! You could instead think: “I’ve  got a lot of experience and value to contribute to the right company” or “I could enjoy lots of roles that I would be a good fit for.” Notice the moments when you start going down the rabbit hole and STOP YOURSELF insert your new motivational belief.

3) STAY COMMITTED BY FOCUSING ON YOUR OUTCOME

While conducting any type of search or contemplating change can feel stressful and depressing at times, we need to keep our spirits and motivation up! Managing our emotions is key and another tip for staying focused on our goals is to remember why we are making a change to begin with. Perhaps we need or want more income or a better opportunity for growth. Remind yourself why you are doing this and keep your vision for what you want to create foremost in your mind. Remember that when you find a better opportunity you will be happier or have the potential to learn and earn more. Remember WHY you are looking to make a change as an ongoing source of inspiration!
